On Friday, Sept. 30, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-CA, promoted the American Jobs Act proposal during a conference call with reporters. The proposal includes $50 billion in transportation spending and another $10 billion to create a national infrastructure bank that would loan money for projects of national significance.

About one month after the state authorized uniform speeds for truckers and other drivers traveling through the Lone Star State, night and day, the first stretches of road to be posted at 75 mph have been identified. The Texas Transportation Commission voted Thursday, Sept. 29, to authorize 75 mph speeds on four Central Texas highways.

Lucas Oil purchases MavTV

Lucas Oil has major plans in the works, including buying control of a cable TV network called MavTV. Lucas Oil Products Executive VP Bob Patison announced Friday, Sept. 30, that MavTV now joins the Lucas Oil Studio family of programming, which already produces more than 350 Hours of Motorsports and Lifestyle television programming annually.

It’s been nearly two years since Tulsa-based Arrow Trucking Co.’s abrupt closure left drivers stranded all over the country. Bankruptcy trustee Patrick J. Malloy III told Land Line on Thursday that a proposed settlement of $450,000 has been reached with former Arrow Trucking Chairman Carol Pielsticker Bump, which may lead to a second payout for drivers.

A new California law allows one county to ask voters for more transportation revenue while the governor vetoed a separate bill intended to benefit transit throughout the state. Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law a bill to authorize a vote in Alameda County on transportation funding.

The Port Authority of South Carolina has launched a truck replacement grant program to help truck owners replace older trucks. Truck owners eligible for the program receive $5,000 toward the purchase of a 2004 or newer engine model year truck, in addition to the value of scrap for their pre-1994 model year engine truck.

Two models of diesel particulate filters that were recently suspended by the California Air Resources Board were not factory installed, but aftermarket devices. The filters, the LongMile truck DPF unit and the off-road Allmetal DPF, were recently taken off the market after the company that makes the units reported a failure on one of its units.

The World’s Largest Truck Convoy for Special Olympics has already rolled through some states, but more will be rolling on Oct. 1. Here’s a heads up for truckers who run I-10 through Louisiana. Traffic will soon be using the I-210 loop as a detour until work is completed on the Calcasieu River Bridge at Lake Charles sometime in 2012. The detour begins Oct. 4.

The majority of states require prospective voters to get squared away at least three weeks before the elections. Fewer than 10 states permit voters to register the same day they cast ballots.

Alaska officials say projected declines in population and oil production need to be addressed. In an effort to better manage revenues, a total of six options proposed by the state Department of Transportation and Public Facilities on its Southeast Alaska Transportation Plan will be presented and discussed in public meetings around the region during the next month.
